On the 18th hole at Bandit golf course, after an intense few days, the Gobbler Championship was still undecided. Peter, Cody, Levi, and Nick batted it out stroke for stroke on a beautiful Sunday finale.
The competition started on day 1 at the Wolfdancer course, where hurricane-level winds made it nearly impossible to break 100. It was such a tough day that only one golfer managed to overcome the brutal conditions and shoot a 99, Keith Koskan.
The championship courses presented unique technological challenges to GPS tools, with Wolfdancer featuring new holes added after construction and Bandit flipping their 9's. Despite the mismatched 18birdies course layouts, the golfers battled on.
On championship day, Peter and Cody took to the tee box as clear favorites. However, Cody struggled early and Peter made some unfortunate mistakes despite a decent start. Levi made an impressive effort to shoot his way back into the lead, taking the top spot at the turn. Meanwhile, Nick was steady Eddie all day long, staying right in the mix.
As the day wore on, Levi's encounter with Poison Oak two days prior started to take its toll. Noting a tingling and out of body sensation early in the back 9, he became feverish in the sun and struggled to finish the round. Peter, exhausted from playing 90 holes of golf in just three days, dug deep and indeed mounted a late charge for the title.
Nick, playing steadily from the front did make things interesting on the final hole. Struggling to get the ball out of the green-side bunker, Nick ended with a triple bogey, opening the door for Peter to steal the victory with a putt on the 18th hole.
With the championship on the line, Peter stood over a 5-foot putt that would seal the deal. The crowd held their breath as he lined up his shot. It grazed the bottom lip and rolled agonizingly past the hole, leaving Nick as the first repeat Gobbler Champion.
It's been an incredible tournament, with ups and downs, twists and turns, and a truly unforgettable finish. Congratulations to Nick on his hard-fought victory, and to all the golfers for making this such a great tournament.
Other Highlights
Peter, in a feat that hasn't been seen since Hercules walked the earth, flew in the Wed. before champ weekend and proceeded to play EVERY regular season course in two days. Once Sunday concluded, that was 108 holes of golf in 4 days! Second place finish for all that effort.
A family affair, Riley Amelio won the big par 3 pot - No group won that contest all year long and so it came down to a single par 3. Lots of confusion on what hole it will happen due to the Bandit switching their 9's. Congratulations.
Rookie sensation - John Lumby - Takes home the little pecker.
