“I’m coming for your margin of victory record, Levi” - Dane Francis after having a dominant regular season performance.
Shootout at the bay. This was the first season that Championship weekend included an overnight stay at Horseshoe Bay Resort. The play and stay experience added another layer of excitement to the weekend as the Gobbler group found opportunities to enjoy the resort's amenities, along with some beverages, between rounds.
Excitement was in no short supply for the tournament, however. After regular season play and a solid first day round. Dane Francis and Nick Amelio had comfortably distanced themselves from the rest of the pack creating a two man shootout at the bay. It can not be said that nerves had an effect on the two leaders during the final rounds. Each played to their potential and as Dane would hit one shot, Nick would be there to match him.
Going into the last day, Dane had but a 5.5 stroke lead on Nick. Given their handicaps and what they were expected to shoot, it was basically tied. During the round the leader would swing from Dane to Nick and then back to Dane as each competitor took advantage of the others' miscues.
When finally the last hole came, Dane maintained a slim margin. For a few long minutes, everything changed after Dane snapped-hooked his tee shot to the left, deep into OB territory. As the group left the tee box and drove up the fairway, an unbelievable turn-of-events unfolded. Dane’s ball somehow was able to hit a tree or rock and come back into play without anyone seeing. It was as if the Golf God’s themselves found it and threw it back in. Even after the miraculous event, Nick was not phased. Nick clutched-up and ended with a beautiful up&down for par on the hole, putting pressure on Dane to finish well. Dane finished, but after a tough 3-putt, carded a double bogie. With the Golf God’s favor, the double bogie was just enough to secure a less than 1 stroke victory for Dane.
Dane completed his goal of winning with a new historical margin of victory, a razor thin margin. This was the closest finish the Gobbler Open has ever seen.
Additionally, all action all season long was captured via video and picture by a great Gobbler guy, Brandon Eiland! This season will continue to live on because of his hard work.
