Someone, somewhere at some point once likened Dane’s golf game to a trip to the black jack table. You may be surprised and see a good run, but you know he’ll eventually bust. Dane “wildcard” Francis the people called him, never knowing what to expect. While that someone wasn’t wrong at the time, they would certainly be wrong now. Dane was anything but wild throughout this season. Dane had the focus and confidence that only a recently unemployed individual could have. He denies resigning from his former company to focus on the Gobbler Championship but given the results, you wouldn’t judge him if he did. He got off the tee box. He saved doubles and drained birdies with a putting stroke only a mother could love. The type of golf every amateur dreams of playing.
Entering the weekend Dane had amassed a nice lead with over 13 strokes off. In a strong second place position was Levi, at 12 strokes off. It seemed like a two man race from the get go.
The boys teed off at Falconhead, Dane doubled the first hole and Levi parred, the game was on. As the round progressed one big difference emerged in Dane’s favor. When Dane would miss hit a ball he was able to miss it in the appropriate place and recover. When Levi miss hit the ball, it resulted in a massive set back. Levi fell back closer to the field shooting his worst round of the tournament, Dane distanced himself more by posting one of his best rounds of the tournament. Because of Dane’s excellent round at Falconhead, Star Ranch was more of a victory lap than a competitive round.
Matt almost made it interesting by playing some unbelievable golf both days. His Star Ranch round of 2 over - Gross 73, was enough to keep Dane honest. Dane still ended up winning by over 9 strokes. So, it kept Dane honest but not concerned.
Dane joins an elite group of premium golfs who have not only won the Gobblers but have won it twice. (Levi Koskan & Nick Amelio.)
